Enter your amount. Type the price you are working with — either before tax or tax-inclusive, depending on what you have.
Pick the rate and direction. Choose a preset (VAT 20%, GST 18%…) or type any rate, then select “Add tax” or “Remove tax”.
Read the split instantly. You get the net amount, the exact tax, and the gross total — ready to quote, invoice, or check a receipt against.
Why getting the tax split right matters
Quote a client a tax-inclusive price without realising it, and the tax comes out of your pocket. Add tax on top of a price your client assumed was final, and the invoice turns into an argument. This calculator removes the guesswork both ways: it adds VAT, GST or sales tax to a net price, and works backwards from a gross total to show how much of it is really tax. When the numbers are right, drop them straight into the free invoice generator — flat tax, per-line tax and GST modes are built in. Not sure what to charge before tax? Work out your rate with the hourly rate calculator first.
Tax calculator FAQ
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate and add it on: a 1,000 item at 20% VAT is 1,000 + 200 = 1,200. In the calculator, choose “Add tax”, enter the amount and rate, and the tax and total appear instantly.
Divide the gross total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 20% VAT, a 1,200 total divides by 1.2 to give a 1,000 net — the VAT inside it is 200. Choose “Remove tax” in the calculator and it does this for you.
VAT and GST are the same idea under different names: a tax on value added, charged at each stage of the supply chain with input credits. Sales tax is charged once, at the final retail sale. The maths for adding or removing them from a price is identical, which is why one calculator covers all three.
The UK charges 20% standard VAT with a 5% reduced rate. Most EU countries sit between 17% and 27% standard. The presets above cover the most common ones, and you can type any rate.
India uses 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% GST slabs. Canada charges 5% federal GST, Australia 10%, New Zealand 15%, and Singapore 9%. Pick a preset or enter your exact rate.
